Sleep apnea is a condition that should be addressed. Oftentimes, people dismiss snoring and don’t take it seriously. As a result, people begin to suffer other medical conditions. Sleep apnea is necessary to recognize, so you can keep your body healthy and get better sleep.

To help you understand more about this condition, our dentists with Monon Family Dental in Zionsville, Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville, Indiana, are happy to provide you with this information on the two main types of sleep apnea and why it should be addressed:

Obstructive sleep apnea:

Obstructive sleep apnea is a standard type of sleep apnea. To begin, it limits the airflow while you sleep because of the soft tissues at the back of your throat collapse, making it difficult to breathe. Obesity is commonly the main reason for this condition.

Central sleep apnea:

Central sleep apnea occurs when there is a limitation of your brain physically sending the correct signals to breathe as you sleep. This condition is less common in people but can still happen in some situations. While the physical airway is not blocked, the brain physically fails to send the correct signals to your lungs, which often happens as other medical issues are occurring in the body such as brain tumors, infections, heart failure, and stroke.

Without enough airflow to your body, while you sleep, your body struggles to do its work. Without treatment, you are putting your body at risk for other dangerous conditions like diabetes, depression, heart failure, stroke, heart attack, and high blood pressure. While you sleep, your body is working to keep your body healthy and operational, which needs proper airflow to do its job. That is why this condition needs to be addressed.
