A new year, a new you, a new…toothbrush? Probably! Did you know you need to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months? Here are some other things to remember as you care for your brush.

The Right Brush: When you choose a new toothbrush, be sure to get one with the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the package. It should have very soft bristles–medium or stiff bristles tear up enamel and gum tissue, leading to extensive and otherwise avoidable damage. Choose a brush that is the right size and shape to fit in your mouth and reach all inside, outside, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.

The Right Habits: Make sure you are brushing your teeth twice a day, for 2 minutes each session. This should be accompanied by adequate and thorough flossing every day for 2-3 minutes. As you develop these foundational habits, your oral hygiene will improve, saving you time, hassle, and discomfort.

The Right Storage: When you are finished brushing your teeth, rinse your toothbrush thoroughly to remove any leftover toothpaste and debris. Store it upright in a well-ventilated area, away from other toothbrushes. This helps prevent cross-contamination.
