For people with braces, holiday foods can seem very limited. The good news is, they don’t have to be! There are still plenty of holiday foods you CAN eat. Here are some common foods that break braces, and some great coordinating options for a delightfully braces-friendly holiday.

Popcorn: For most people, popcorn kernels getting caught between teeth is annoying. However, with braces, kernels between teeth can lead to painful inflammation of the gum tissue and damage to wires and brackets. No popcorn this year! Instead, grab some crunchy potato chips. Make sure to brush and floss thoroughly after eating, though, as the starchy chips can feed the bacteria that live in your mouth.

Candy Canes: Candy canes are, unfortunately, also bad for your braces. Crunching on hard candy can break brackets, and the sticky residue from sucking on candy is difficult to clean. To get your peppermint fix, try adding peppermint syrup to white hot chocolate. Eating soft peppermint patties coated in chocolate is also a delicious idea, as are peppermint brownies.

Caramel: Eating sticky caramel is a terrible plan if you have braces. Try a caramel-flavored hot chocolate or coffee creamer, instead. Remember to accompany all sugary beverages with a glass of plain water! This cleans the mouth and reduces risk of tooth decay.

Remember, stick with small portion sizes. Have a treat or two, then stop, clean your mouth thoroughly, and enjoy the rest of your holiday!

If these limitations seem a little overwhelming, consider Invisalign! This gives you a straight smile without many of the restrictions of traditional braces.
