Odds are, at some time you’ll need to visit a dentist and have some type of dental treatment performed. However, do you know what you should do—and avoid doing—after your treatment? Naturally, our dentist will tell you what you should do after any treatment, but we’re happy to give you a few ideas on what you should expect after common treatments.

For instance, do you know what you should do after you have a filling? There are a few things we recommend, including avoiding hot and cold foods for a few days. Your teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold during this time—but extreme temperatures could also damage your filling. Similarly, we recommend brushing and flossing gently for a few days so you don’t damage your filling.

When you get a crown placed, you should know that your tooth may be sensitive for a few days. You should also remember to avoid biting down on anything for at least an hour after your permanent crown is placed. Waiting this long will help the cement set properly. However, after a crown is placed, we recommend avoiding sticky candies such as taffy, as they can loosen your crown and cause it to come out. Fortunately, if you care for your crown well, you may never have to replace it.

Finally, if you have a tooth extraction, there are a few general rules you should follow. For example, you should keep your mouth firmly closed to apply pressure to your gauze and prevent bleeding. Similarly, you should avoid using a straw, smoking, and using pipes for at least 24 hours. You should also remember to apply ice packs periodically to reduce swelling, though you shouldn’t keep them on your cheek for more than ten minutes at a time.
